TPS (Transcranial Pulse Stimulation): Alzheimer and Beyond (2025)
Deep brain stimulation with ultrasonic pulses: TPS research in Alzheimer, Parkinson and other neurodegenerative diseases.
TPS (Transcranial Pulse Stimulation)
TPS is a novel neuromodulation technology that non-invasively stimulates brain tissue using focused ultrasonic pulses. Developed by Storz Medical (Austria), applied via the Neurolith® device.
Mechanism
- Low-energy focused ultrasound pulses
- MRI-guided targeting capability
- Can reach deep brain structures (unlike rTMS)
- Activates neurons via mechanotransduction
Alzheimer's Disease
- Beisteiner et al. (2020): Pilot study — significant CERAD improvement, 3-month lasting effect
- Phase 3 trial (2024-2025) with 200+ patients ongoing
- FDA Breakthrough Device designation for AD
Other Research Areas
Parkinson's disease, MS cognitive impairment, depression, traumatic brain injury, and drug delivery via temporary BBB opening.
